Let's Walk

A winding path through a lush green forest.

Walking is one of the most accessible ways to support your overall wellness.

  • Heart Health: Brisk walking for just 30 minutes a day can help maintain healthy blood pressure and support long-term cardiovascular strength.

  • Joint and Bone Support: As a low-impact weight-bearing exercise, walking helps maintain bone density and keeps joints lubricated, which is vital for mobility as we age.

  • Mental Clarity: Stepping away from the screen for a daily walk is a proven way to reduce stress and improve your mood.

  • Digestive Rhythm: A gentle walk after a meal helps your body process food more efficiently, which can prevent that heavy, sluggish feeling.

Improved Sleep: Regular physical activity helps regulate your internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Sometimes the hardest part is finding a good place to walk. If you aren't surrounded by amazing scenery and abundant walking trails. There are still lots of options. I live in one of the hottest cities in the United States, in summer it's simply not an option to walk outside - even at night in the temperature can still be in the upper 90s to over 100 degrees. So finding places to walk comfortably can be a challenge.

Here are some ideas for different locals that might just make the difference for you. The last one is my favorite!

Suburban & Local Options

  • Community Parks: Local parks often feature paved, level loops that are perfect for a low-impact stroll.

  • Residential Neighborhoods: Walking right outside your door is the easiest way to remain consistent with a daily habit.

  • Local High School Tracks: When school is not in session, community tracks provide a flat, cushioned surface that is very easy on the joints.

Nature & Scenic Paths

  • Nature Trails: Look for "interpretive" or "ADA-accessible" trails in local conservation areas, as these are designed to be wide and flat.

  • Lakefront or River Walks: Paths along water are typically level and offer a calming environment that supports mental clarity.

  • Botanical Gardens: These offer well-maintained paths and plenty of benches if you want to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

Indoor Alternatives

  • Shopping Malls: If the Nevada heat becomes too intense, malls provide a climate-controlled environment with flat floors and clear distances.

  • Large Home Improvement Stores: These offer long, wide aisles and are a great way to get steps in while staying indoors.

Pro-Tip for the Desert Transition:

When the temperatures finally start to dip back into the double digits, don't rush back to the trails all at once! Start with short morning walks to let your body adjust to the outdoor air again before heading back to your favorite trail.
